Kaminer Haislip Silversmithing Films

Kaminer Haislip’s silversmithing process and artwork are the focus of an exciting new film series. In five separate films, she demonstrates how she creates her sterling silver bowls and spoons, discusses the inspiration behind her handcrafted hollowware objects, and shows how she draws her original designs before progressing to silver. The five films debuted with her collaborative exhibition Interwoven: The Art of Indigo and Silver with Leigh Magar at Aiken Center for the Arts in historic, downtown Aiken, South Carolina in spring 2023.

Silver Wedding Gift Ideas

Despite so many weddings being postponed or held in a much smaller gathering than originally planned due to coronavirus, giving a gift to the happy couple is still a must to show your support and celebrate their marriage! Silver is a classic heirloom wedding gift and my functional silver objects are extremely popular to commemorate the joyous occasion. My designs are inspired by traditional silver forms, but are interpreted in my original, contemporary style. A unique, handcrafted silver gift will be cherished for generations to come and is such a memorable, lasting gift to receive.

My website Shop has a wide variety of options available and many can be personalized with hand engraving for a special finishing touch. Detailed below are some of the most favored of my classic silver wedding gifts.

Coronavirus is keeping more people at home these days, so stock the newlywed’s bar with fun silver accessories they will use while enjoying evenings at home together or for stylish entertaining (while being conscientious of social distancing of course!). Silver bar spoons, personalized decanter tags with their favorite libations engraved on the front, tumblers and cups, wine goblets, and wine coasters are all useful and beautiful gifts.

Let’s not forget the very important hors d’oeuvres for snacking during cocktail hour! Silver appetizer accessories shine and make serving the tasty bites even more enjoyable.

The silver and glass cheese tray shown above is the same silver and glass cake tray pictured at the top of this post. My Ziggurat Tray creates a stunning tablescape and is very versatile for many uses, including serving hors d’oeuvres, cheese, anti-pasta, cakes and desserts, or for a table centerpiece displaying fruit or flowers.

The silver cheese knife, spreader, condiment spoon, and appetizer fork were all forged and have a hammered handle. Due to the hammering process, they are very sturdy and functional. Plus they bring contemporary refinement to the setting.

A popular wedding gift is my Nest Bowl, comprised of hammered and woven sterling silver wire.  The nest acts as a metaphor for building a new life and home together.  Nest Bowl comes in three sizes, 4″, 6″, and 8″ in diameter, but can also be created in custom sizes. It functions beautifully for serving bread or crackers or on a vanity or dresser for holding items.

For serving up the main course, my silver salad servers and serving spoon make excellent silver wedding gifts that will be used frequently and not just on holidays. My husband and I use our silver serving spoons regularly and get a lot of enjoyment out of them!

A pair of silver napkin rings with the couple’s initials hand engraved on them is a lovely gift that can be built upon over the years. Starting them on any collection creates a gift you as well as others can give to help them complete the set.

Silver bowls, dishes, and boxes are also thoughtful silver wedding gifts, not only for their useful function on a coffee table, dresser, or vanity, but also for their beauty and enhancement of a new abode. Most of my silver bowls, dishes, and boxes come in a variety of sizes and too can be completed as a set in the future.

The Pink House Vendor Spotlight – July 2016

Kaminer Haislip’s silver and copper Poppy Bowls and silver Charleston Rice Spoon are being carried by the Houston, TX based lifestyle brand The Pink House, a subdivision of Lanson B Jones Landscape Architecture.  Curated by former Charleston resident Megan Chandler, read her interview with Kaminer below!  You can also see the full feature and Kaminer’s products at https://www.lbjfloral-events.com/blogs/news/vendor-spotlight-kamier-haislip-17

PH: We’ve recently launched our online boutique. This boutique is a collection of pieces that I personally use and have uses for when it comes to anything “entertaining,” “hosting” or “gifting.” These are the pieces I see as having value to creating a very curated life.

Each vendor whose pieces I have chosen in our boutique is a talented artisan. I want to share with you why each is so special, and I’m starting with famed silversmith, Kaminer Haislip. Kaminer’s work can be found featured in ForbesArchitectural Digest, Traditional Home, Garden and Gun, Elle Décor, Southern Living and in Reese Witherspoon’s famed Nashville boutique, Draper James. I am so are beyond thrilled to bring her decadent work to Texas and share a little bit about her with you!

PH: Kaminer, where are you from?

KH: Aiken, SC

PH: Tell our readers, as a Southern hostess, what are your must haves when hosting a gathering?

KH: Silver and lots of it! Silver serving pieces such as condiment spoons, appetizer forks, cheese knives, spreaders, serving spoons, and salad servers are a must. Silver vases for flowers make a lovely presentation and silver trays and bowls for serving food looks stunning!

Kaminer’s Charleston Rice spoon, featured above, is one of our favorite wedding gifts, and serving pieces in the boutique!

PH: Using your silver pieces when hosting a party makes me want to plan an elegant soiree right now! So many of these pieces inspire me; what inspires you?

KH: My silversmithing designs are inspired by the interaction with functional objects and traditional techniques. My themes vary for different series, but all of my work is unified by elegant and timeless design. My original designs are not steered by fashion or trends and are created with exceptional craftsmanship. Recent inspiration includes coral reefs from my scuba diving experiences, birds, ancient jewelry pieces such as torcs and annular brooches, and flowers such as the poppy and calla lily.

PH: I love that you draw inspiration from flowers! As I’m sure you know, blooms are a huge source of what drives my creativity. What’s your favorite flower?

KH: The poppy flower is my favorite flower due to its representation and inspiration to WWI veterans. They adopted the poppy as a symbol of strength despite its delicate appearance after seeing it grow and survive in the war torn fields of Europe.

PH: I love that, and I love how much thought you put into each piece you make. I know you take such pride in your work. How did you get started in your career?

KH: I grew up in my family’s hardware and appliance business in Aiken, SC, which spurred my interest in tools and making things. I became enthusiastic about jewelry and sculpture in high school and went to Winthrop University for my BFA in Jewelry and Metals. My major professor, Alfred Ward, is a British silversmith from London, so I learned all of the traditional silversmithing techniques from him. After graduating with my MFA in Silversmithing also from Winthrop University, I moved to Charleston and started my business.

PH: I miss Charleston everyday, especially in the summer! In the spirit of sweet-summertime, I’m dreaming of my next vacation. Where are you headed next?

KH: TBD, because my husband Matt and I have just begun a massive renovation to our home in downtown Charleston, and it is consuming all of our free time right now!

PH: Well, you hardly need to travel living in Charleston and being beachside! What are you reading on the beach this summer?

KH: I have a hard time concentrating on books at the beach, so I like to read magazines. I read a lot and subscribe to W, Newsweek, Travel + Leisure, Charleston Mercury, and Charleston Magazine. It is fun to share magazines and interesting articles with friends while hanging out on the beach!

Silver poppy bowl with fresh summer snacks! Yes, please!

While the silver poppy bowl can’t be used beachside, it can be used to display amazing fresh summer snacks!

PH: Finally, Kaminer, I have to know, because candles and home fragrances are one of my all time favorite things. I’m never at home without a candle burning, and I’ve really hinged my curated shop on this. What home fragrance can’t you live without?

KH: My friend Lulie Wallace recently developed candles as an extension of her floral inspired paintings. They smell incredible and last much longer than most candles! My husband Matt enjoys cooking, so they work great to get the smell of onion and garlic out of the kitchen.

PH: Thank you so much for sharing with me, Kaminer! And for sharing your pieces in the boutique!

12 Decadent Host and Hostess Gifts

by Vivienne Decker

Summer is filled with weekends away and parties, so I came up with a list of the best host and hostess gifts to suit the season. The best kinds of gifts to give are always the ones that people wouldn’t necessarily buy themselves, whether it be a cozy beach blanket, leather headphones, or a firewood scented candle. These tokens of affection will have you covered for any occasion.

I love this Sterling Silver Magnolia bowl from Reese Witherspoon’s new brand, Draper James. Designed by award-winning silversmith Kaminer Haislip from Charleston, SC, it will surely become a family heirloom. Retail $400, available at Draper James.

Reese Witherspoon recruits Charleston businesswoman for new fashion line

by Warren L. Wise

P&C_image

Actress Reese Witherspoon launched her fashion and lifestyle website, Draper James, this week. The line includes a silver piece made by Charleston silversmith Kaminer Haislip.

Southern-born actress Reese Witherspoon turned to help in Charleston before she launched her new Draper James sportswear and lifestyle label online earlier this week.

Trying to connect with as many Southern sources as possible, she recruited silversmith Kaminer Haislip for one of her home and entertaining items.

Haislip, from her studio on St. Philip Street, provided a hand-made sterling silver bowl in the shape of a magnolia blossom. It’s priced at $400. “I love to do unusual and unique projects,” she said. “This was a fun project to work on with them. I’m excited they are promoting Southern lifestyle brands. It’s a really good fit for my work.”

Witherspoon’s company also tapped Hanna Nation Seabrook for stationery items.

Seabrook, who lived in Charleston for several years but now calls Kentucky home, provided design work for paper products, such as notecards and notepads, and creative direction for some of the home and gifting goods.

“Being included in this strong Southern line is such an honor,” she said.

The name for Witherspoon’s line is derived from her maternal grandparents, Dorothea Draper and William James Witherspoon.
