I am so incredibly proud to announce I have been honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution with a prestigious award for the annual American Heritage Competition. My sterling silver pendant Memorial Continental Hall was awarded the American Heritage Award for Crafts, First Place in the Jewelry category! It is such an honor and privilege to receive this prominent award for my artwork. The theme this year was Rise, and Shine Your Light on Our House Beautiful, which refers to DAR’s National Headquarters in Washington, DC.

My submission to the 2022 American Heritage Competition was a sterling silver pendant inspired by the gorgeous building in the striking image above. The National Historic Landmark was built in 1905 and designed by the architect Edward Pearce Casey, designer of the interior of the Library of Congress. The building is in the beaux-arts classical revival style, which harmonized with the other structures developed in the area at that time.

The façade of Memorial Continental Hall was my focal point for the 1” diameter pendant and I used images found online as my visual guide.

The building design was hand drawn onto sterling silver sheet and then etched with an acid technique to create the textured lines. Once the design was etched, I cut out the round shape with a piercing saw and soldered a round silver frame onto it. The frame was hand filed and sanded flush with the etched piece of silver to give the illusion it is one piece. I then soldered the bail at the top for the chain to go through. Once all of the silver pieces had been fabricated, I sanded and polished it to a high shine, mirror finish.

I will receive the award formally at DAR Continental Congress in June and I am so excited to highlight my wonderful Charleston DAR Rebecca Motte Chapter during this special event! Rebecca Motte’s father Robert Brewton and grandfather Miles Brewton were two of the most accomplished and talented silversmiths of colonial Charleston. Hopefully I am representing our chapter namesake well!

On Saturday, April 16 I was honored with an additional award my Rebecca Motte Chapter nominated me for. Pictured above is me with our Chapter Regent Katie Hyman receiving the American Heritage Committee Women in the Arts Recognition Award. It really meant the world to me for my chapter to think that highly of my artwork to submit me for this outstanding award. Many thanks to all who made it possible and attended that day to support me!

Drawing as a Starting Point

I am frequently asked how I come up with my ideas and develop them into silver artworks, so this Blog post discusses how I use drawing as a starting point for my design process. When an idea inspires me to create a new hollowware piece or jewelry series, I begin designing by loosely sketching in my sketchbook. As the form or shape of a piece begins to take shape, I refine the rendering with correct proportions and details.

Once I have chosen the final form from the various refined renderings, I draw the object or jewelry piece to scale of the actual item on Canson paper using graphite pencils and Prisma Color Pencils (media of all three drawings included in this post). The design continues to evolve in the to scale state with decisions made about handle size, spout curve, and overall proportions of the object. It is much easier, faster, and more economical to change the design on paper than it is in silver!

My drawings also assist me in the pricing of an object or jewelry piece, because they tell me the exact size of silver sheet or wire to purchase.

I follow the same path when beginning a client’s custom commission design. Based on conversations I have with a client on their vision or concept for a custom object or jewelry piece, I use those specifics to begin designing a unique, one of a kind piece especially for them. The collaboration between client and artist is a process I very much enjoy! A new artwork I would not have thought of on my own emerges from the collaboration and it challenges me to think outside of my regular work zone.

50th Wedding Anniversary Gift Commission – Custom Jewelry Collection

Recently I had the pleasure of working with a gentleman on a custom jewelry collection as a 50th wedding anniversary gift for his wife. The traditional gift to commemorate a 50th wedding anniversary is gold, so this jewelry collection consisting of a cuff bracelet, pendant necklace, and set of post earrings was made from 14k yellow gold. The concept  for the Interlocking Jewelry Collection was inspired by two wedding bands interlocking and overlapping with open space between the two rings. The shape of the gold wire is a slight half round shape that I formed to look like their gold wedding bands.

In addition to hand drawn renderings, I also created prototypes to work out the forms in copper wire before moving on to the precious metal gold. I emailed my client the drawings and prototypes and we worked together closely over the course of several months to develop this exclusive collection for his special wife. The amount of thought and detail he put into it was very sweet and I thoroughly enjoyed working with him to develop this unique jewelry collection!

Corporate Gift Commissions

Kaminer Haislip offers services for corporate gift commissions that include custom designed jewelry and silver products. A recent custom corporate gift that is featured on this post was commissioned for a company retreat held at the resort Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, SC.

Kaminer was inspired by the shape of a Lowcountry oyster shell and designed these silver Oyster Earrings and Oyster Dish specially for the group in attendance. The ladies were given the silver earrings and the men the silver dish as the company retreat gift.

Additional previous corporate gift commissions include silver condiment spoons for the ladies and silver bar or cocktail spoons for the men, custom designed Christmas ornaments, and cufflinks.

Kaminer Haislip’s handcrafted, original large hoop earrings are one of her most popular jewelry designs! They are extremely versatile for a wide variety of stylish looks and go day to night easily. The hammered hoop earring looks heavy, but is in fact very light. Kaminer creates volume to the large hoop by hammering sheet silver, which thins it out and makes it visually large, but not heavy in weight. As the International Editor at Large for Vogue, Hamish Bowles is recognized as one of the most respected authorities on the worlds of fashion and interior design. With one of the largest private collections of vintage clothing in the world, this dapper, globetrotting style icon has made a name for himself as a fashion historian.

Friday, March 13, 2015 he was the guest lecturer at the Gibbes Museum of Art spring luncheon.  The Gibbes invited me to design and make a special gift for him, which were the silver Lilac Cufflinks pictured above.  I was inspired by his passion for the color lilac and designed the cufflinks based on the flower.  The other image is of him showing them off to the ladies at the luncheon.  It was quite an honor to create something unique for such a renowned fashion figure!
