The Society of the Four Arts – November 2015

I am honored to have a variety of my silver hollowware and jewelry included in the contemporary gallery of the exhibition “An Eye for Opulence: Charleston through the Lens of the Rivers Collection”.  The exhibition will be on display November 21 – January 10, 2016 at The Society of the Four Arts in Palm Beach, FL.

The main focus of this unique exhibition tells the story of Charleston’s golden era—from the colonial to antebellum city—through the lens of the Rivers Collection and enhanced by decorative and fine arts from Charleston’s public institutions.  Featuring more than 100 objects, this exhibition comprises the exceptional holdings of John M. Rivers Jr. in addition to key loans from the Gibbes Museum of Art, Historic Charleston Foundation, and select objects from Drayton Hall and The Charleston Museum. Recognizing that significant examples of Charleston furniture and silver were dispersing outside the Charleston area, John M. Rivers Jr., whose family has been in Charleston continuously since 1670, began forming the Rivers Collection in 1988.

It is an enormous compliment to have my silver designs presented as a supporting element to this exciting exhibition along with several other talented contemporary Charleston artists. Many thanks to the exceptionally brilliant curator Brandy Culp for her commitment and hard work on this exhibition!

Artist Statement:

While earning my MFA, I designed and created steel and wood panels utilizing a similar technique employed with these two new series. I recently revisited the process and the Fog and Ripple Series developed. Nickel and copper sheet have been adhered to wood panels that were then filed and finished to create a seamless appearance. Layers of spray paint were applied to the surface, which were then intuitively sanded with fine steel wool to create the hazy appearance. The sides of the 1.5″ deep panels are painted a neutral grey.

The Fog Series was inspired by light breaking through fog and clouds. Through the process of subtraction with the steel wool, I revealed hints of the nickel underneath the paint. I am intrigued by the idea that things are not always as they appear and sought to convey that concept with this series.

The Ripple Series was based on light as well, but reflecting off of a water surface as opposed to passing through something. As light bounces off of water, it changes the appearance and is temporarily a new image. Inspired by the ephemeral nature of this concept, I created my own interpretation of it with this series.

*Please note* these pieces will not be for sale on Kaminer’s website!  They are only available for purchase through Kaminer directly.  If you are interested in purchasing one, then please send an email inquiry to info@kaminerhaislip.com.  A response will be sent to you that includes pricing, dimensions, and images of works available.  You are welcome to view the pieces at Redux during the duration of the exhibition and set up an appointment to meet with Kaminer.

Draper James Feature

Draper James Southern Lifestyle Company Feature

DraperJames_dress

Draper James, Reese Witherspoon’s new Southern lifestyle company, did a feature on me and it is posted on their website blog!  They sent me their gorgeous Navy Stripe Hillsboro dress to wear for the photoshoot.  The incredibly talented Paul Cheney and Jason Kaumeyer of JWKPEC took the picture.  Read below for the feature, which can also be seen on their website at http://www.draperjames.com/editorial/index/view/id/5

A couple of years ago Garden & Gun included Kaminer Haislip, a Charleston, South Carolina-based silversmith in their “Best of Southern Design” issue. Reese saw the write up, which featured Kaminer’s beautiful handmade silver coffee pot, tore out the page, and saved it knowing that one day she had to meet Kaminer and see her work in person. So when looking for artisans to contribute to Draper James, Reese knew just where to go. For Draper James, Kaminer has created a handmade limited edition sterling silver bowl in the shape of our favorite flower, the magnolia. Without question, it’s a future heirloom.

Want to know more about Kaminer? She answered our Draper James Seven—seven questions that define a Southern style maker. Read on to see what she had to say.

1. What is your favorite Southern city?
Charleston, where I live, is my favorite Southern city. The sense of history and place with its distinctive architecture paired with a contemporary, forward thinking creative community has made me feel right at home. Charleston also has a rich history of silversmithing—I like to think that by living here I am carrying on the tradition!

2. Favorite Southern restaurant?
Husk in Charleston blends traditional Southern foods with contemporary dining in a spectacular way! I love how the locally based menu is always changing to reflect the season.

3. Favorite Southern tradition?
Fall is my favorite time of year in the South and with the fall comes Southern oyster roasts—my favorite tradition!

4. Sweet tea or unsweetened?
I like my tea “half and half” as we call it in the South—half sweet and half unsweet tea.

5. Cowboy boots or heels?
Cowboy boots for sure! I am all about comfort, especially since I am on my feet for long hours in my studio working.

6. How do you describe Southern style?
My definition of Southern style (for both men and women) is always being put together and knowing how to dress appropriately for any occasion.

7. Describe your style.
My style is a mixture of a classic look with a contemporary twist.
